Underground Cleaners Deported

On 19 August, 2008, in News reviews, by Nick Vassilev

Two underground cleaners have been deported by the UKBA (United Kingdom Border Agency) for working illegaly in the country. They have been arrested by immigration officers at their employers offices after turning up for a day of work. A strange coincidence is that the operation took place on a strike day organised by the worker’s RMT union.

The UKBA has released information based on the Freedom of Information act that the operation has been planned and executed with the knowledge of the cleaners’ employer, GBM Services.

A UK Border Agency spokesperson said, “UKBA will not tolerate illegal working. Newcomers who do not play by the rules break the deal they made with the UK when they entered the country.”

It has been confirmed that 2 of the 3 arrested cleaners have been already deported to their home countries. One of them has been deported to Congo apparently a war zone.

Members of the RMT has been raising questions why the arrested and deported cleaners have been treated like criminals when they ” have done nothing wrong but work”. Questions have been raised about the policy of the government to deport people to countries known as “unsafe”.
