- Mitcham Common. It is a large piece of beautiful open space located close to Beddington Corner CR4, in South London. The Common, which is also known as Seven Islands, consists of 182 hectares of common land situated on Croydon Road, on the edge of the small Surrey town of Mitcham. Originally it was the poorest, least productive soil in the parish. The site was designed as common land and was used by parishioners to graze animals and to cut turf and timber for fuel. The nickname Seven Islands refers to the common’s largest pond, which was created as a result of gravel extraction in the 19th century. Mitcham Common has always been a place of importance as it lies on the border between Greater London and Surrey. Therefore, traders and merchants would pass through the vicinity on their way to the Capital. There are a few buildings on the site, including the Windmill Trading Estate. Some of the buildings have existed in one form or another since the second half of the 18th century, when the Windmill Trading Estate was built as workhouses for the poor. Nowadays the common is a favourite place of peace and tranquility, relaxation and enjoyment for local people and visitors of the area.
- As from 1931, Beddington Corner and Hackbridge have their own parish church, dedicated to All Saints. Located on New Road, Mitcham CR4, the facility is Gothic in character and comprises a nave divided into five bays that are franked by large aisles to the north and south. The line of the nave walls go forward uninterrupted into the choir which is complemented to the north by a Lady Chapel and to the south by both the choir and vicar’s vestries. Matching porches are located at the northwest and southwest corners of the church, and there is a small stone bellcote surmounting the west gable. All Saints is part of the Diocese of Southwark. The church is home to a large community of dedicated Christians with members of all ages and social backgrounds. They meet on a regular basis at the facility for private and public prayer, as well as to get involved with the community affairs of the day. This includes charitable functions and a series of other social events organised on the site of the church throughout the year.
