Interesting Stuff…
- The area of Custom House is situated within the London Borough of Newham and was named after the custom house of Royal Victoria Dock.
- Located on the corner of Freemasons Road, the Custom House Hotel was opened in 2001 to provide service to the expected trade from the nearby ExCel centre.
- The area of Custom House housed the West Ham Hammers speedway team at the West Ham Stadium. The stadium had the capacity of 120,000 and after its demolition many roads built on the site were named after team’s stars- Aub Lawson, Jack Young and promoter Johnie Hoskins.
- During the early 30s of the 20th century Custom House was home to a football league club- Thames A.F.C. Unfortunately the club was dissolved in 1932.
- Some of the most famous residents of the area include brothers Mike and Jeff Geggus. They are founder members of the punk band The Cockney Rejects, and were both born in Custom House.
