Did you know that...
Both residentially and commercially developed, Mitcham is situated in south-west London on the border of Inner London and Outer London, in the London Borough of Merton. The district is home to a vast area of 460 acres of green space in South London containing several ponds and a few buildings, better know as Mitcham Common.
Some of the famous buildings settled in the area of Mitcham SW16 include:
- Eagle House. It is Queen Anne’s house built in the Dutch style in 1705 on London Road. Now the building is used as a school for children and young people with autism.
- The Connors. The house, which was built in 1680, was the home of the Cranmer family, until it was sold in 1939 to the local council. The house takes its name from an Augustinian priory that was settled in the 12th century.
- Old Mitcham Station. Located on the Surrey Iron Railway route, and now called Station Court, it is believed to be the oldest station in the world.
- Mitcham Public Library. Built in 1933 on a land donated by the local builder Mr Joseph Owen.
- St Barnabas Church. An Anglican church, located on Gorringe Park Avenue and built in the Gothic style in 1913 and consecrated a year later by the bishop of Southwark.
