What Happens on the Day

Typical drying time: up to 6 hours

  1. Survey

We check the fibre, fitting and condition of each carpet and note any stains before we start. Furniture legs go onto protective pads and door frames are guarded.

  2. Pre-treat

Dry soil is vacuumed out first, because water turns it to mud. A pre-spray matched to wool or synthetic fibre is applied and agitated in.

  3. Hot water extraction

Remaining spots are treated individually, then the carpet is rinsed and extracted at controlled heat. A citrus deodoriser goes in with the final rinse.

  4. Dry and finish

An air mover is left running to speed up drying and the pile is groomed in one direction. Scotchgard goes on now if you’ve asked for it.

Carpet cleaning
“A dinner party left red wine across the pale sitting-room carpet. I expected a permanent mark – the technician had it out in under fifteen minutes, with no patchiness.”

Sophie L. · Tite Street, SW3

Stair runner cleaning
“Our townhouse has a wool runner over five flights. They cleaned it in place without lifting a single stair rod, the edges came up evenly, and it was dry enough to walk on by the evening.”

Edward P. · Paultons Square, SW3

Carpet cleaning + pet odour
“With a spaniel and a cream bedroom carpet, the smell had crept back after every shop-bought spray. The enzyme treatment finally cleared it, and they talked me through each step before starting.”

Monica N. · Gertrude Street, SW10

Cleaning Carpets Across Chelsea

Chelsea is a residential district with a wide range of homes in it. Around Cheyne Walk and Old Church Street you’ll find Georgian and early Victorian houses, many with tall, narrow staircases and wool runners held by brass rods. The garden squares off the King’s Road – Carlyle, Markham and Paultons – tend to have fitted wool or wool-mix carpet in the reception rooms, often with antique or hand-knotted rugs laid over parquet. Before cleaning wool we test the dyes, and we use a fibre-safe pre-spray so the pile keeps its colour and doesn’t shrink.

Much of Chelsea is flats. The red-brick mansion blocks around Sloane Square and Draycott Place usually have a porter, a lift that has to be booked and communal carpet that residents care about. Further west, the converted houses of SW10 often have no lift, steep upper stairs and synthetic carpet over old boards, while the new-builds at Chelsea Waterfront come with concierge access and carpet only in the bedrooms. Whatever the building, we start every visit with a short survey of the fibre, the fitting and the access. Then we choose between hot water extraction and a low-moisture method, and we know how long the carpet will take to dry before we start.

Access and parking

Chelsea’s streets are covered by the Royal Borough’s controlled parking. Most have resident bays, visitor bays are short-stay and pay-by-phone, and the streets near Fulham Road get busier on Stamford Bridge match days. Late May brings extra traffic around the Royal Hospital during the Chelsea Flower Show.

When you book, we’ll confirm where the van can stop. For bigger jobs we can arrange a bay suspension. In mansion blocks we’ll work with your porter on lift times, and for top-floor flats or homes far from the kerb we carry a portable extraction unit upstairs rather than running hoses in from the street.

Sloane Square & Draycott

Around Sloane Square, Sloane Gardens and Draycott Place, the red-brick mansion flats have porters, small lifts and long carpeted corridors. We agree lift times in advance, protect communal floors on the way in and clean pale wool carpets with a pH-balanced rinse.

Royal Avenue & Royal Hospital

Between the King’s Road and the Royal Hospital, the houses on Royal Avenue, St Leonard’s Terrace and Smith Street often have fine wool carpets and antique rugs. We usually clean these rugs with a low-moisture method so the dyes stay put.

Old Chelsea & Cheyne Walk

Riverside Georgian houses and the quiet streets behind them, such as Old Church Street, Lawrence Street and Glebe Place, mean tall staircases and runners held by rods. We clean runners in place, step by step, and take care around painted balustrades.

Chelsea Green & Elystan Street

Cottages, mews houses and small blocks around Chelsea Green tend to have compact rooms that families use hard. Hallway traffic lanes, children’s bedrooms and dining room spills are the usual jobs, often finished in a single morning.

The Boltons & Redcliffe

West of Edith Grove, the large villas of The Boltons sit next to the converted terraces of Redcliffe Square and Gardens. That means anything from deep-pile carpets in big houses to synthetic carpet in top-floor flats with no lift and steep stairs.

World’s End & Lots Road

Post-war blocks around World’s End and the newer riverside apartments off Lots Road change tenants often. End-of-tenancy carpet cleans, deodorising and stain removal ahead of check-out inspections make up most of our work here.

Carpet Cleaning in Chelsea: Your Questions Answered

Straight answers to the questions Chelsea customers ask most before booking a carpet clean.

Can you clean wool carpets and hand-knotted rugs safely?

Yes. Before anything else we check the fibre and test the dyes on a hidden corner. Wool and wool-mix carpets get a pH-balanced pre-spray and a controlled rinse, so the pile doesn’t brown, shrink or lose its colour. Hand-knotted and antique rugs usually suit a low-moisture method, and if a rug needs more care than we can give on site, we’ll tell you before we start.

Do you clean stair runners in place?

Yes. Most stair runners in Chelsea period houses are cleaned where they lie. We work down from the top step, paying extra attention to the nosings and the landing turns, which wear fastest. If the stair rods need to come off to reach the edges, we lift them, and put them back once the runner is dry.

How do you work in mansion blocks with porters and shared lifts?

Tell us the building’s rules when you book. We’ll arrange lift times with your porter or managing agent, cover the communal floors between the lift and your door, and use a portable extraction unit inside the flat so no hoses run through shared areas.

Will cleaning remove old red wine and coffee stains?

Most fresh and many older stains come out completely, especially on wool and nylon. Stains that have set over months, or that have already been treated with a household product, can leave a faint shadow. We’ll look at each one before we start and tell you honestly what to expect.

Do I need to move the furniture before you arrive?

No. Please clear small items, ornaments and anything fragile, and we’ll move the lighter furniture ourselves. Heavy pieces such as pianos, bookcases and beds stay where they are, and we clean around them. Pieces we’ve moved go back on protective pads or foil tabs until the carpet is dry.

Can you clean carpets at the end of a tenancy?

Yes. End-of-tenancy carpet cleans are among our most common jobs in Chelsea, especially in SW10 and around World’s End. Book the clean as close to check-out as you can, so the carpets are dry and looking their best when the inventory clerk arrives.
