Interesting Stuff…
- Ape’s Grove. It is a wonderful semi natural ancient woodland in the Abridge Village, Essex RM4. The site lies to the west of the village and is easily accessible via a public alley from New Farm. Locally known as Bluebell Wood, it is bounded by an impressive ditch and bank which encloses a woodland stand that is predominantly of hornbeam coppice, with episodic oak and ash standards. Due to the heavy shade created by the dense canopy, Bluebell Wood provides the ideal conditions for a sparse ground flora. Therefore, a spectacular carpet of bluebells, on which the site was nicknamed to, still dominates during springtime. The site is well maintained by Epping Forest Countrycare working with Essex County Council, who managed to make Ape’s Grove more accessible for walkers. This was achieved by laying a boardwalk through a extremely wet area of the woodland, constructing bridges over the ditches, and placing steps to prevent the erosion of the ancient bank boundary.
- Willow Cottage Theatre. It is an open-air theatre set in a wooded glade on the site of a 17th century cottage in Abridge RM4. This event started back in 1962 when a natural amphitheatre was discovered after brambles were being cleared away in the wood outside the cottage. Since the amphitheatre was found, every summer a varied series of events, from Shakespeare and Moliere to modern drama and music is presented on the site. Willow Cottage Theatre has provides exclusive venue feel, with an environment harking back to the origins of theatre when travelling artists, players and musicians entertained local people and visitors from further afield.

- Former football player manager Alan Curbishly (born 1957), who has worked in the FA Premier League, managing Charlton Athletic and West Ham, currently lives in Abridge. During his career as a player, Curbishly played for West Ham, Birmingham City, Aston Vila, Charlton Athletic and Brighton & Hove Albion. In 1990 he retired as player/coach to Charlton.
- Musician, singer-songwriter and actor David Essex (born 1947), who has attended 19 Top 40 singles in the UK and 16 Top 40 albums, used to live in the Abridge RM4.
