Did you know that…
- Barkingside is an area which until 1965 was historically part of Essex. It is best known for the children’s charity Barnardo’s, which was established on the site in 1866.
- Some of the oldest buildings in the area include: the underground station, which was originally an Edwardian mainline station, the Holy Trinity Church, dating back to 1840, and Barnardo’s chapel. It is also known for comprising a relatively large Jewish community.
- Former footballer and now manager, Sir Trevor David Brooking was born in Barking in 1948 and attended Ilford County High School. Since his retirement as a football player he has taken up number of positions in broadcasting, which included an on-air analyst and getting involved in administration.
