Did you know that...

  • Aldgate was the eastern-most gateway through London. On the east the ward of Aldgate EC3 is bordered by the line of the former City wall, effectively parallel with Houndsditch, which divides it from the Portsoken ward. On the south there is Tower-street ward while on the west and north are located Langbourn, Limestreet, and Bishopsgate wards.
  • According to history, it is thought that a gate at Aldgate was already traversing the road to Colchester during the Roman period, when the wall was constructed. The gateway was situated at the corner of the modern Duke’s Place and was always an impediment to traffic. The gate was reconstructed between 1108 and 1147, then again in 1215, and completely rebuilt between 1607 and 1609, to be finally removed in 1761.
  • Nowadays the area of Aldgate is dominated by the insurance industry, giving home to several brokers and underwriters based there. Most striking buildings include the Lloyd’s Register building, 30 St Mary Axe, the Willis Building and the London Metal Exchange.
