Interesting Stuff…

  • St Giles’s Church. Located in Church Street in Farnborough BR6, it is the parish church of this relatively small town situated on the southern corner of Greater London, at the edge of the North Downs of Kent. The church has a rich and extraordinary history dating back over a thousand years and has been ever since the principle place of worship for local people and visitors of the area. St Giles is housed in a beautiful church building, made of stone in the Norman style, and is remarked for its wood carvings and vivid stained windows.

  • Princess Royal University Hospital. It is a large acute district hospital located in Locksbottom, close to Farnborough BR6, that provides general hospital services. Opened in April 2003 to provide the services previously provided by Bromley and Farnborough Hospitals, the Princess Royal University Hospital is set on the grounds where the former Farnborough Hospital stood. It was administered by the Bromley Hospital NHS Trust until April 2009, when it became part of the South London Healthcare, which was formed when Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust and Queen Mary’s Sidcup NHS Trust merged into one. When the new Princess Royal University Hospital was established, the facility was partly funded by the sale of the grounds occupied by Bromley Hospital, and partly by private funding.

  • Farnborough War Memorial. It is a beautiful cross-shaped monument erected close to the parish church at Church Street in the leafy town of Farnborough BR6. The memorial commemorates those people from the area, who felt down, got injured and, in general, have made such sacrifices for the country and in some cases paid with their lives during the two World Wars.

  • The Airplane Crash. In 2008 Farnborough became woefully famous when an airplane, Cessna model 501Citation, crashed into a house in Romsey Close, Farnborough BR6. The plane took off from runway 21 of the Biggin Hill Airport in a direction to Pau Pyrenees Airport, France. Less than two minutes after the plane has flown, one of the pilots signalised the airport control for engine vibrations and requested an immediate return to Biggin Hill. Though the craft was given permission to land in any runway, shortly after the radio signal the Cessna lost quickly altitude and crashed into the property in Ramsey Close. There were two crew members and three passengers on its board, who all died during the crash. The passengers included David Leslie, 54 years old former British Car Champion driver and commentator for Eurosport Channel; Richard Lloyd, aged 63 who was team owner of Apex Motorsport and also a former British Touring Car Champion; and Christopher Allarton-  a 25 yers old data engineer for Apex Motorsport, who had only been in his position for a week before the accident.
