Blackheath is a residential suburb which is mostly located within the London Borough of Lewisham. The suburb is named after the large open public grassland that separates it from Greenwich to the north and from Lewisham to the west.
The name was first mentioned in 1166 as “Blachehedfeld”, meaning the “dark coloured heathland”. This name derives from the Old English “blæc” and “h?th” and refers to the open space that was the meeting site of the ancient hundred of Blackheath.
