Most of Cheam is built up, but there are still some green areas as Cheam Park with a tennis court and children’s playground. There are number of schools, shops and landmarks in the area.
Whitehall is one of the most visited tourist sites in the area. Located at 1 Malden Road, in the centre of Cheam Village SM3, it is a continuous jettied timber-framed house that was originally built around 1500. The building, which was originally constructed as a wattle and daub yeoman farmer’s house, has been recently refurbished with permanent displays. These include medieval Cheam pottery, Nonsuch Palace, and a display focused on showing the social history of the house. Other features include authentic timbering with wattle and daub, a rear garden with a 15th century Well, as well as a tearoom with delicious home-cooked cakes. Now an historic house museum, Whitehall boasts a changing programme of events and exhibitions, which are also focused around the history of the building and its inhabitants.
