Interesting Stuff
Foots Cray is a place in the Borough of Bexley with the river Cray passing through the village. Its proximity to the river and also to the old Maidstone Road made it an attractive place to settle. Today the area is still a small settlement with some industrial and office premises, together with limited residential developments.
Foots Cray Place in Foots Cray, Kent DA14, was once one of the most elegant houses in the UK. Rebuilt around 1754 for Bourchier Cleeve, on the site of the manor, this building was also a rarity as it was one of only few buildings in England inspired by Andrea Palladio’s Villa Rotunda style. The original manor was held by the Walsingham family who held it for 6 generation until they sold the property around 1676. Perhaps the most noted member of the family was Sir Francis Walsingham (1532-1590), who was principal secretary to Queen Elizabeth I. He was particularly noted for establishing an effective spy network that uncovered the Babington Plot in 1585. Compromising that conspiracy enabled the Queen to remain on power and led to the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.
