Interesting Stuff…

  • The name of the area was first recorded in 1320 as ‘Elmsted’, meaning ‘the place where elm trees grow’. According to a map of the early 1760s, there was a house known as Emsted Place in the site, and around 1797 a gazetteer added yet another interpretation on the name, by calling the hamlet settlement Hamsted. The gazetteer reported that the settlement had just one gentleman’s house, which was most likely the Emsted Place, and that the premises belonged to a Pall Mall bookseller. The rest of the local area was said to include farms and labourers cottages.

  • Elmstead Woods railway station. The local railway station was built in 1865. It was the last station to open from the railway line from St John’s to Chislehurst, whose construction was launched in 1865. The ‘Wood’ affix to the name was added four years after the station was opened, presumably to attract day-trippers from the central London suburbs. Most of the facilities that surround the station were constructed up in the early 20th century due to the expansion and constantly growing population of Chislehurst.

  • Elmstead Pit is one of the most noted attractions in Elmstead BR7. Located just beside the railway station, it is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest where fossils from the Eocene epoch, which is approximately 50 million years ago, has been excavated. It comprises a small area of 0.05hectare and was formally known as the Rock Pits. The pit exposes an important geological strata of the Oldhaven, or alternatively known as Blackheath Beds. Blackheath Beds refers to a marine deposits, which were built up some 50 mill years ago, and consist of a rich and diverse selection of fossils fauna, such as fish scales and sharks fins. The geological features that were discovered on the site help scientists to explain the changes in the disposition of land and see in the London Area. Unfortunately, the Elmstead Pit is located on land that belongs to the Sundbridge Park Golf Club and there is no public access.
