Interesting places in Barking IG11:

  • Barking Park. Located in Longbridge Road and opened in 1898, it is the oldest public park in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Barking Park comprises nearly 30 ha, including a 910 metre long lake, tree lined avenues, ornamental areas, playing fields and facilities for football, bowls and boating. The park is also host to a number of annual events and activities, organised by the Barking Park Education and Outreach Ranger Service. This includes the East London Mela, November Fireworks Display, as well as guided walks. Barking Park is managed and maintained by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and, since the dedicated Ranger Service was established in 2008, it is staffed seven days a week.

  • Barking Abbey. Located just a short distance from Barking town centre between Abbey Road and Broadway, there are the ruins of the Barking Abbey together with the Curfew Tower situated alongside the ancient Parish Church of St Margaret. Recent excavations have been carried on the site, revealing some of the remains of the first abbey of Erkenwald. Objects and artefacts that have been found include carved bone, jewellery, gold thread, pottery and glassmaking show, which have turned Barking Abbey into one of Europe’s most important religious archaeological sites. The remains of the Barking Abbey are open to the public, and there is no admission charge.

  • Eastbury Manor House. Architecturally distinguished and well preserved, it is a fine example of a medium sized brick built Elizabethan manor house. Built by Clement Sysley, a rich Essex merchant, it was used as a merchant’s house. Recent restoration has been carried in the building, revealing some notable 17th century wall painting on the first floor. Daniel Defoe describes Eastbury Manor House as a place “where tradition says the Gunpowder Treason plot was first contrived”. Today the manor house is managed by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. It is open to the public and is also used as a heritage, art and community centre.
