Interesting Stuff…
- Elmers End is a place in London Borough of Bromley, England. Elmers End station is a terminus for Tramlink services to Croydon as well as being on the railway between London Charing Cross and Hayes, Bromley.
- There are two leading theories about where the name Elmers End originated. The more romantic of the two is that a famous highwayman, Elmer, was hung at the crossroads, making it ‘Elmer’s end’. The less romantic, but possibly more historically accurate, reason is that there were a lot of elm trees in the area. This would, of course, logically result in the location being called Elms End. However the original Victorian railway companies were notorious for both getting place names wrong when naming their stations and for trying to make station names grander than was really justified so this explanation is quite plausible had it not been for the fact that Elmers End as a name clearly predates the coming of the railway by at least ten years.
- The old industrial estate which was on the south side of the railway track has mostly closed down. It is now a Tesco superstore. The former Bolloms paint factory site, on the opposite side of the road has been redeveloped into an industrial estate.
- South Norwood Country Park. Opened to the public in 1989, and comprising 126 acre of green space, it is the largest park in South Norwood. The park consists of a mix of countryside and parkland, as well as land that was formally used for sewage farms. There are three tram stops on the site, with the main one at Harrington Road, and the main entrance to the park is on Albert Road. Facilities include pitch and putt, lake, and a children’s playground. South Norwood Lake is man-made reservoir and is perhaps one of the most relaxing places in this area of London. It was built as part of the Croydon Canal and was initially owned by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Besides the lake, which is 28 acre and available for sailing and fishing, in this site of South Norwood Country Park you will find cricket wickets, tennis courts, basketball court and a bowling green area. The children’s playground at the park was closed in 2006 due to health and safety issues. It was in 2008 when Croydon Council re-built the playground on a site that was formally used as a pitch and putt course. Giving home to a wide and varied range of animals, the South Norwood Country Park is also a haven for wildlife and a very popular place for nature lovers.
- Beckenham United Reform Church. It is one of the most important Free Church venues of worship in this south London suburb. Housed in an interesting building, the church moved to its present location at 135 Upper Elmers End Road, in 1875 and has been serving the local community ever since. Beckenham United Reform Church is home to a congregation of who meet on a regular basis to take part in both private and communal worship and prayer. All members of the church are committed Christians, who are interested in the affairs of the community and get involved in a series of charitable and social functions to benefit those less fortunate than others. The church has also a few organisation and groups that use the church’s facilities. This includes Spanish Dancing, Pilates, Tai Chi Chuan, Janie Harris Ballet School, Laura Bruce Dance Academy, U3A Watercolour Group, Montessori, Crescent Club, and Luncheon Club.
