Interesting Stuff…
- Malden Rushett is a small hamlet settlement situated around the junction of Leatherhead Road and Fairoak Road. It is the first settlement when entering the borough and includes some very attractive Victorian cottages and villas, giving the village its distinctive character. There are also many farms, situated south of Rushett Lane and Fairoak Lane, some of which include Rushett Farm, Byhurst Farm, and Oakfield and Glanmire Farms.
- The settlement of Malden Rushett was once closely connected with Malden, as being named as Lower Malden on the 1868 map of the vicinity. The local original mission church was founded in 1850, situated opposite the site of Star Cottage close to the borough boundary. Opposite this site in the lands of the Star public house is based on of the Corporation of London Coal Duty Boundary post, which is located about 20 miles from the old general post office in London. Posts were set at all principal entrances to the Capital to mark the area from which tax was due on coal and wine entering London. As being the first residential settlement within the borough boundary, today Malden Rushett is still a main gateway to the Royal Borough of Kensington upon Thames with a strong village feel and rural edge character.
- South of Malden Rushett KT9 is situated Rushett Common. The common is an area of predominantly green land, consisting of two strips of woodland alongside the A243 and spreading to the edge of the borough boundary between Surrey and London. The locality has a number of sites of nature conservation interest, as well as a nature reserve defined in Jubilee Wood. The open nature of Rushett Common differs from the wooded character of the area outside the common and, despite the Sixty Acre Wood, the boundary of the borough follow the natural edge of the surrounding woodland. Within Rushett Common is also Telegraph Hill. Initially referred to as Cabbage Hill, it was the site where a station on the Admiralty Shutter telegraph line was based. The telegraph line used the shutter system to communicate between London and Portsmouth between 1796 and 1816. The station consisted of small, two-roomed wooden facilities included with a frame holding the six wooden shutters.
