Did you know that...

  • Maryland is an area in east London forming the northeastern part of Stratford in the London Borough of Newham. Maryland E15 borders Forest Gate to the east, Stratford New Town to the west, Leytonstone to the north, and with centre of Stratford to the south-west.
  • The area firstly appeared on a map of Essex published by J. Oliver in 1696, when it was Maryland was marked as “Maryland Point”. This name is considered to originate from a local merchant who purchased land and built in the area after he returned from the American colony of Maryland.
  • During the centuries many attempts have been made in order to identify the merchant. The candidate who is most likely to be the mysterious merchant is perhaps Richard Lee, who went to Virginia around 1640. Lee’s estate in Virginia included land on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, which is near a place known as Maryland Point that later became the Maryland Point Light. On his returning to England in 1658, Lee bought land in Stratford, and four years later was recorded as the owner of a large house on the site.
