Interesting Stuff
- Cann Hall E11 is a ward and former civil parish within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. The area is located east of Leyton, west of Wanstead Flats, north of Stratford and Forest Gate, and is the southernmost tip of Epping Forest.
- According the Domesday Book of 1086, the area’s landowner was recorded as Hugh de Montfort, whose family possessed a large amount of land after the Norman conquest. Montfort’s daughter, Adela, gave the holding to the canons of Holy Trinity, Aldgate in 1121, and is considered that the later name of the manor is a construction of “Canons Hall”.
- Until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1532, the priory at Holy Trinity retained Cann Hall. Two old barns and a little cottage were the only buildings that were attached to the farm at that time, but nevertheless several petitions were conducted to the crown for ownership.
