One of the most notable local landmarks is Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge. Originally called the Great Standing, this unique timber framed lodge was built for Henry VIII in 1543. It was used as a grandstand from where the King watched the hunting of deer. Located on Chingford Plain, the building offers some of the most fascinating views of Epping Forest, which was also the perfect location for hunting. Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge has been beautifully preserved and contains a large number of interesting displays focused on the Tudors era. These include a kitchen exhibition and costumes, as well as information about the forest.
