Crossness Pumping Centre
Officially opened in April 1865, the Crossness Pumping Centre was constructed by engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette and architect Charles Henry Driver as a part of Victorian London’s urgently need of main sewerage system. With its four still running original engines, named Prince Consort, Victoria, Albert Edward and Alexandra which are also the largest remaining rotative beam engines in the world, the Beam Engine House is a grade 1 Listed Industrial Building constructed in Romanesque style, featuring some distinctive Victorian cast ironwork in its design.
Crossness Nature Reserve
With its 20 hectares of open land, it is one of the last remaining areas of glazing marsh in suburban London, and the largest reedbed in Bexley. Part of Erith Marshes, situated north of Eastern Way and east of Crossness Sewage Treatment Works on Belvedere Road, the reserve is a home of a great variety of birds, mammals, invertebrates, butterflies, dragonflies and plants. Even most of the area is opened for public access, its most delicate wildlife part is accessible only to permit holders, via membership of the “Friends of Crossness Nature Reserve Scheme”.
