Local Area Info

The name Gospel Oak comes from an oak tree, under which local people gathered to hear an annual gospel reading when the settlement was still rural. Development of the area began in the mid 19th century when local landlords were Lords Southampton, Lisburne and Mansfield. Plans were made for refined streets starting from Lismore Circus but, due to the two local railway lines were extended, the first buildings to be build were two and three-storey cottages. The cottages were predominantly occupied by navies and quarrelsome shoemakers. Later Gospel Oak became more respectable residential area, though the poet Sir John Benjamin and his family felt they were a cut above this neighbourhood, when the family moved to West Hill. Two architecturally remarkable churches were built in Gospel Oak.

St Martin Church. Located on Vicars Road, this church was designed by Edward Buckton Lamb and erected in 1865. The architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner describes the building as “the craziest of London’s Victorian churches”. Situated just a stone throw away from Parliament Hill the most notable feature of this Grade I listed building is its tall tower, the pinnacles of which were removed after damage. All six of the original church bells have inscriptions and are still regularly used. Once inside, you will probably be fascinated most by the huge dark timber roof, making an impression of space beneath. It also has two memorial windows, by the William Morris London factory, which were given in the early 1900s and picture Christ the Good Shepherd and St Cecilia, who is considered the patron saint of music.

All Hallow Church, Gospel Oak. The other church was completely built in 1901 and was described by Pevsner as a “masterpiece”.  The land for the church has been purchased from the Earl of Mansfield in 1888 and the construction work was started in 1892. In January 1901 the Nave was consecrated by the Bishop of Islington, and one month later All Hallows officially became a Parish Church. By the mid 1910s, the Chancel, the great four-manual organ, and the latter were added. Situated on Savernake Road, close to the pedestrian bridge to Hampstead Heath, the church is in the northern part of the neighbourhood. Today All Hallow is the largest parish in Hampstead, covering the area from Downshire Hill to Belsize Park and Gospel Oak stations.
